Project "Cat-Nip Voucher" July 2010 - June 2011
We are happy to announce that we have received another $15,000 grant from the No Kill Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation. This grant allows us to offer our popular Cat Nip Voucher Program again this year. Vouchers will be issued until all the money is gone.
Purpose of this Program:
- Involve more private practice veterinarians in sterilizing free-roaming cats in an effort to achieve the city's goal of No Kill by 2012.
- Help to ease the burden on the existing low cost spay/neuter resources.
- Improve access by increasing the number of available low cost spay/neuter resources in the city.
- Provides discounts for people who need financial support to do TNR.
How to get a voucher:
- Vouchers are available only to San Antonio residents who have attended an SAFCC TNR Workshop.
- There is a limit of 5/month per Workshop attendee. The vouchers expire 1 month after being issued.
- Call the SAFCC Helpline at 877-9067 or email your request to: info@sanantonioferalcats.org
- Vouchers will also be available at the TNR Workshops.
Protocols:
- Cat Nip Vouchers are ONLY to be used for outdoor (feral or stray) cats, not pets.
- Our TNR protocol must be followed: 1 cat per trap, trap must be covered, no food or water at least 8 hours before surgery, cats must be recovered in a climate-controlled, protected environment (24 hrs for males, 48 hrs for females and 72 hrs for pregnant females).
- Present the voucher (1 per cat) at the time of surgery. Payment is due when the cat is picked up and will be the amount for the services minus the value of the voucher.
- $50.00 for a male neuter or a combo test positive cat that is euthanized
- $75.00 for a female spay or a cryptorchid male.
- Cats will not receive pre-anesthetic blood work.
- Cats in a TNR program are not required to be combo-tested for FIV or FeLV.
This test will be performed only if the cat shows symptoms of an immune-deficiency disease. If positive, the caretaker will be notified. SAFCC recommends euthanizing sick cats that test positive. Reimbursement for a combo positive cat that is euthanized will be $50.00.
- All cats will be ear-tipped (tip of left ear surgically removed under anesthesia).

Information for interested veterinarians:
We welcome and encourage all local veterinarians to participate. You will receive a training video showing protocols for dealing with feral cats. All cats will be delivered in a cat trap making it possible to anesthetize them without touching them.
Administrative paperwork: The veterinarian will sign the voucher to verify surgery was done. Then mail a copy of the medical record and the voucher to SAFCC in the pre-addressed envelope provided.
SAFCC will mail a check for the amount of the vouchers within 10 days of receipt.
